Laos

Our Top Picks...

#5

Picture
BECKY: Blue Lagoon Vang Vieng

A bit of a journey to get to down a bumpy, dirt road but well worth the refreshing reward upon arrival. You can purchase drinks from local vendors and enjoy the cool waters (and rope swing if you're keen).

SHANE: Street Food

Again my stomach has had a say in my top 5. Delicious market food floods the streets throughout Laos. Variety galore, my only regret is not pushing through the pain barrier and sampling more.

SHANE: Vang Vieng

A really chilled out little village with a ton of variety when it comes to night life and eating out. Plenty of activities including tubing and a short trip to the blue lagoon which is a must. Note: Apparently happy herb pizza only makes you hungrier.
BECKY: River cruise & Pak Ou Caves

From Luang Prabang we rented a boat and guide to take us to Pak Ou Caves. Along the way we stopped at a small local village where they made whiskey. The boat ride was very relaxing and the caves were a sight. I've never seen so many Buddha statues in one place.

BECKY: Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a backpacker's dream. Streets of cafes and restaurants where you can find cheap drinks, good food and continuously looping Friends re-runs. I also got to play with a puppy in a cafe, so bonus points.

SHANE: Blue Lagoon Vang Vieng

A must do if your in Vang Vieng. Scenic drive that takes you to a Blue lagoon funnily enough. Great day of chilling out, having a swim and a few beers.

SHANE: Luang Prabang

Ah the serenity, really pretty little village that you can spend a day just exploring. Great sunrise/sunset views from the hill in the centre of town. Day trips up and down the river really give you the chance to appreciate the scenery and the easy going and friendly nature of the locals.
BECKY: Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is less touristy but still offers plenty to see and do. Walk up to the top of the hill in the centre of town just before sunset to enjoy to view. On your way down, stop and enjoy the night markets and little hidden laneways of food market stalls.

#1- Our Favourites

Picture
BECKY: Village walk & Kuang Si waterfalls

Despite forgetting to pack shoes and doing the entire hike in thongs, this village walk provided an uninterrupted view into village life. The scenery was beautiful and while the hike was long, we were rewarded at the end by the cool, blue waters of the Kuang Si waterfalls.
SHANE: Village walk & Kuang Si waterfalls

Easily my favourite day in Laos. 2 hour walk through small villages and bush land before arriving at the top of Kuang Si falls. Natural fresh water pools up the top to swim in and refresh after the hike. Then make your way down a tricky steep track next to the falls to reach the bottom. Clear blue pools at the bottom for another swim and on your way out catch a glimpse of native bears at the rescue centre. Do it!

And our least favourites...

SHANE: Nothing

Nothing comes to mind that I can recall negatively. Really pretty country with incredible food, people and sites. I did see a dead kitten in Vientiane :(

BECKY: Vientiane

There isn't much to see or do in Vientiane that you can't find a better, less crowed version of elsewhere in the country. If you are using the city as an airport or travel hub, I suggest a visit to Buddha Park- a small park full of massive Buddha statues.
Note: Shane made a point to show me the dead kitten as well. :(
